Before + After: Our Linen Closet

Ever since the show Tidying Up with Marie Kondo came out on Netflix, i’ve been wanting to get down and dirty with some of the unorganized spots in our home. I started with the linen closet and I feel GREAT! While I’m not a fan of the show on Netflix (I barely made it through one episode), I do think the KonMari method makes so much sense. Here are some before and after photos of our linen closet and some tips on why I did what I did.

I put all of the rarely used electronic items on the top shelf, to leave space on the eye-level shelves for day-to-day items like towels. Some of those electronics include: heating pad, steamer, iron/ironing board, humidifier. These items can still be accessed with ease but don’t take up space where more important things need to be.

I purchased these bins and these bins from Target and utilized the rest of the storage containers I had already owned, like these canisters from Crate & Barrel. I like to use bins and baskets to organize things by category, so that when you’re looking for something specific, you know what bin to look in. I.e. if I’m looking for cough syrup, I know it’s in the medicines bin.

I rolled up our hand towels and wash clothes to make it easier to pull them out of their space, rather than knocking down a pile trying to grab one.

I purchased this shelf paper when we moved into our house two years ago.

By displaying items like cotton rounds and toilet paper in decorative bins, you have a better idea of how much you have left, rather than getting to the bottom of the toilet paper sack and realizing you only have one roll left.

I got rid of all things that didn’t spark joy, like nail polishes that I don’t ever wear anymore or a set of curlers I’ve had since I was ten years old. I also used a larger bin to store fitted sheets because those are NOT flattering to look at when folded.

I hope this post inspires you to get after your own demons in your closet!
